CNN —The trial of Andrew Tate, a self-proclaimed “misogynist” online influencer accused of human trafficking and rape, can go ahead, a Romanian court said Friday. Tate was indicted in June along with his brother Tristan and two Romanian citizens on charges of human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women – allegations they have denied. The court in Bucharest, Romania’s capital, has not yet confirmed a trial date and the Tate brothers have already appealed the ruling, said Mateea Petrescu, a spokeswoman for the brothers. Romanian prosecutors alleged the Tate brothers seduced victims by falsely claiming they wanted a relationship or marriage with them. The Tate brothers, both former professional kickboxers, were first arrested in December 2022 and kept in police custody until April 2023, before being placed under house arrest.

And now it’s fall, when the continent really comes into its own as the leaves – and visitor numbers – start to drop. A recent report from luxury travel network Virtuoso named Paris, London and Florence as the most booked cities for fall travel. “Fall is one of the best times to visit Europe because of the vast variety of interests [the season] can cater to,” says Mina Agnos, president of luxury travel company Travelive. If you’re ready for a different take on Europe this fall, we’ve got ideas. Fall also means it’s harvest time in Rebland – an area southwest of Baden-Baden famous for its Riesling.

Imagine these sorts of risk, and the men and women enduring its nerve-wracking toll nightly, when you next hear talk of the progress of Ukraine’s counteroffensive. But make no mistake: this is perhaps the most important moment for European security since the Berlin Wall fell, or even 1945. Ukraine’s forces are nowhere near where they hoped they would be as fall draws in. Russian President Vladimir Putin is presumably counting on winter to strengthen his position. It was the rationale behind not supplying Ukraine with longer-range missiles that could strike Crimea or Russian territory bordering Ukraine.

Moscow aims to disrupt Ukraine's ability to export grain to world markets with a sustained campaign of attacks targeting Ukrainian Danube ports, and has attacked the port of Izmail four times this week, Ukrainian officials say. Across from Izmail, pieces apparently from a drone were found near the Romanian village of Plauru, Romanian Defense Minister Angel Tilvar said Wednesday. “In the first phase (of the war) things were calmer, but now it has come to our territory,” she said. “We are worried because nobody can guarantee that (a drone) won’t fall on our side of the river,” he said. Beyond trying to calm us down, the authorities can’t do much about it.”___Stephen McGrath reported from Sighisoara, Romania.

Mr. Blinken “affirmed our unwavering support to Romania, our NATO ally,” according to a State Department summary of the call. American military officials did not respond to requests for comment on Friday. Russian drones have struck the port city repeatedly in recent weeks as Moscow targets what has been a shipping lifeline for Ukraine. Throughout the war, NATO aircraft have frequently intercepted Russian fighter jets that have flown too close to allied nations’ airspace. Three weeks ago, British and Danish fighter jets were scrambled to confront Russian bombers that officials said were heading toward Scotland and the Netherlands.

CNN —Russian forces attacked Ukrainian port facilities on the Danube River used for food exports on Sunday, a day before Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to discuss reviving a grain export deal with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Ukraine’s Air Force said 25 drones were used in overnight attacks on the Odesa region, 22 of which were shot down. Russia’s Ministry of Defense said in a statement that it was targeting fuel storage facilities in the Ukrainian port of Reni used to supply Ukraine’s military. An aide to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused the Kremlin of trying to create a “food crisis” with the attacks. He will likely to discuss reviving the deal while meeting with Putin in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi on Monday.

LONDON, July 5 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Europe’s biggest listing this year is off to a cautious start. Hidroelectrica, Romania’s top hydropower producer, priced on Wednesday its initial public offering (IPO) at 104 lei ($22.87 per share, the middle of a proposed range, raising 1.8 billion euros. That values the whole utility at 46.8 billion lei, or 9.4 billion euros. And temperatures are expected to soar across large parts of the world, making hydropower plants more vulnerable to droughts. LONDON, June 28 (Reuters Breakingviews) - A jumbo hydropower listing may define how investors assess extreme weather risks. Over the last decade, hydropower has been the largest source of clean energy, International Energy Agency data shows. At the top of the range it would raise up to 2 billion euros and be Europe’s largest IPO so far this year. Alarmingly, Hidroelectrica’s gross hydropower generation fell about 15% last year from its annual average of 15.9 terawatt-hours in the decade to 2022. The IPO carries a price range of between 94 Romanian lei and 112 lei (18.95 euros and 22.58 euros) per share, giving the company a potential market capitalisation of 42.3 billion lei to 50.4 billion lei (8.53 billion euros to 10.16 billion euros), Hidroelectrica said in its prospectus.

A video of Romanian tanks rolling along a street has been shared online accompanied by a false claim that it shows Romania’s army entering Moldova. “New footage of Romanian army entering Moldova,” said one Twitter user sharing the footage on Feb. 25 (here ). Gen. Constantin Spinu, the Romanian Ministry of National Defence (MoND) spokesperson, said that claims of Romania moving military equipment to the Moldovan border were false. Other videos posted on social media that show the rehearsals in Alba Iulia also show a procession of five tanks, as seen in the shorter clip (here ) (here ). The video was filmed in Alba Iulia, hundreds of kilometres away from Moldova, and the defence ministry says it was likely taken during rehearsals for Romania’s National Day.

British-American Andrew Tate, 36, who's been based mainly in Romania since 2017, and his 34-year-old brother have denied all the allegations against them. Spokesperson Sue Beeby told Reuters that Andrew Tate "has never had" a creator account or received payments. BUCHAREST, Romania — Romania’s anti-organized crime agency has carried out seven additional house searches in its investigation into divisive social media influencer Andrew Tate, an official said Thursday. His brother, Tristan, and two Romanian women were also arrested. On Tuesday, a court upheld a judge’s Dec. 30 move to extend their arrest from 24 hours to 30 days. More than 10 properties and land owned by companies registered to the Tate brothers have also been seized so far. DIICOT says it has identified six victims in the human trafficking case who were subjected to “acts of physical violence and mental coercion” and were sexually exploited by the members of the alleged crime group.
BUCHAREST, Romania — A court in Romania’s capital Bucharest has upheld the 30-day arrest of divisive social media personality and self-described misogynist Andrew Tate on charges of organized crime, human trafficking and rape, an official said late Tuesday. Ramona Bolla, a spokesperson for Romanian anti-organized crime agency DIICOT, said the court rejected an appeal by Tate against a judge’s earlier decision to extend his arrest from 24 hours to 30 days. Tate, 36, a British-U.S. citizen who has 4.5 million followers on Twitter, was initially detained on Dec. 29 for 24 hours along with his brother Tristan, who was charged in the same case. The court late Tuesday rejected all four appeals against a judge’s Dec. 30 decision to grant prosecutors’ request to extend the arrest period. The week of his arrest, he traded insults on Twitter with teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg.
Andrew Tate in Romanian court to appeal detention

The divisive social media personality Andrew Tate arrived at a court in Romania in handcuffs on Tuesday morning to appeal against a judge’s earlier decision to extend his arrest period from 24 hours to 30 days on charges of being part of an organized crime group, human trafficking and rape. All four of them immediately challenged the arrest extension that was granted to prosecutors on Dec. 30. If the court overturns the extension, the defendants could be put under house arrest or similar conditions such as being banned from leaving Romania. Since Tate’s arrest, a series of ambiguous posts have appeared on his Twitter account, each of which garners widespread media attention. One, posted on Sunday and accompanied by a local report suggesting he or his brother have required medical care since their detention, reads: “The Matrix has attacked me.
Claims that the pizza boxes in a video posted by ex-kickboxer Andrew Tate led to his and his brother arrest in December have been widely shared online. Social media users claimed the divisive internet character “gave away his location” with the pizza boxes in his clip. For roughly half of the rest of the clip, the brand, and a website address for a Romanian pizza restaurant printed on the boxes were viewable in the shot. However, there is no publicly-available evidence that Tate’s arrest was made as a result of the pizza boxes. There is no publicly-available evidence that the pizza boxes in a video published by Andrew Tate revealed his location to the Romanian police.
On Tuesday, Tate tweeted at Thunberg, referring to his “33 cars” and their “enormous emissions.”Thunberg responded on Wednesday, making a joke about Tate’s genitals. After Tate’s arrest, posts quickly went viral, speculating that the pizza boxes in the video had been an important factor in locating Tate. But Ramona Bolla, a spokesperson for DIICOT, refuted that the pizza boxes had anything to do with Tate’s arrest. On Twitter, many responded to Tate’s days-old Twitter feud with Thunberg with jokes about the interaction and Tate’s arrest. In the video, Afualo said she saw the news about Tate’s arrest.
Video showing Andrew and Tristan Tate walking out of the headquarters of Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) dates back to at least April 12, 2022. Pointing to a recent report by Romanian outlet Digi 24 about the brothers’ arrest on Dec. 29, which included undated b-roll footage, social media users falsely claimed that the ex-kickboxer and his brother were no longer detained. Examples of users misrepresenting the footage in the newscast are viewable on Twitter (here) and Facebook (here). “Andrew and Tristan Tate were NOT released tonight,” Constantin wrote via email on Dec. 30. Reuters previously addressed another months-old video being circulated as recent in relation to the Tate brothers’ arrest (here)VERDICTMissing context.
